Where did your last Ethiopian job offer actually come from? Job boards, Telegram, referrals or direct applications compared
Job hunting in Ethiopia runs through several channels at once, and what works depends on your field.
The main channels people use:
- Online job boards such as Ethiojobs and similar listing sites
- Telegram job channels that repost vacancies, often faster than boards
- LinkedIn, mostly for banking, telecom, tech, consulting and international firms
- NGO and UN portals such as ReliefWeb and UN careers pages for development-sector roles
- Newspaper vacancy notices, still common for government offices, banks and universities
- Direct walk-in or email applications and personal referrals
Things worth checking before you apply anywhere:
- Is the employer named, with a real office address and a contact you can verify?
- Does the closing date and application method match what is on the employer's own site or notice board?
- Are you being asked to pay anything to apply? Treat that as a red flag.
One caution on repost channels: a vacancy copied onto a Telegram channel may be old, altered or fake. Go back to the original employer's notice when you can.
Questions for you:
- Which channel gave you your last interview or offer?
- Which sectors still rely mostly on newspaper notices?
- Any boards or channels that turned out to be a waste of time?
