CV and cover letter in Ethiopia: what to include, what to leave out, and what employers actually ask for
Local expectations around CVs differ from Western templates, and they vary by sector. Here is a discussion starter.
Things members often report employers asking for:
- Photocopies of educational credentials and, for some roles, a Certificate of Competence (COC) or professional licence
- Work experience letters or reference letters from past employers, sometimes on letterhead with a stamp
- A short, targeted cover letter addressed to a named person or the HR office
- Application by hard copy at the employer's office, by email, or through an online portal, as the notice states
General good practice:
- Keep the CV to one or two pages, most recent first
- Match the wording of the vacancy notice, especially required qualifications and years of experience
- Follow the stated deadline and submission method exactly
- Use a professional email address
- Write in the language of the notice
Questions for you:
- What documents did you actually have to submit at your last interview?
- Did a government, NGO or private employer ask for anything unusual?
- Any template that worked well?
